I just found a story out of New York city regarding lead paint in apartments provided by the Dept of Homeless services

"An analysis of city data revealed the city cited about 900 apartment buildings for thousands of lead violations after placing families in the buildings through the Bloomberg administration's Housing Stability Plus program."
Well there's the problem right there, but wait, it gets better:
"Documents from the inspectors' visit on Dec. 6, 2004, show the landlord never signed the specific area on a city form to certify that the home was free of lead. "
Well I certainly hope this landlord is disciplined as they put many children at risk. My question is, why wasn't this omission caught sooner?
"There also is no way of knowing whether the 3,900 additional apartment buildings used by the Housing Stability Plus program contain lead paint. City officials told The News they only inspect for lead paint after residents call to complain about problems in their homes"
Well that's just great. So apparently they're just going to sit and wait until more young children turn up with Lead in their blood. Although one can look at this many ways. Since most social services agencies get peanuts for funding, it is possible that they may not be fiscally capable of inspecting all these apartments. But at some point, the city government is going to have to pull itself up by the bootstraps and protect these kids that are potentially being exposed to lead paint. Don't wait until their parents call in and make a complaint!!!
